Guardian Article Exposing Illegal Deforestation in the Amazon Quotes Firm Client Alex Wijeratna of Mighty Earth

The Guardian recently published an important exposé shining a light on meat processors such as JBS and others, who publicly claim to be working to combat illegal deforestation while their actions tell a different story. The article reveals that approximately 800 million trees have been felled in the Amazon in just the past six years to meet the global demand for beef.

Our client Alex Wijeratna, Senior Director of the Global Protein Campaign at the international advocacy organization Mighty Earth, notes in the article: “The Amazon is very close to a tipping point. So these types of figures are very alarming because the Amazon can’t afford to be losing this number of trees … this has planetary implications.”

We have worked closely with Alex and his Mighty Earth colleague, Founder and CEO Glenn Hurowitz, to bring to the attention of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this kind of misleading greenwashing by JBS and others. You can read our SEC whistleblower submission about JBS here, and our submission about Japan’s infrastructure bank here.
